George Harry Amyrald, known as Harry, was my uncle. He was bullied and abused as a child in his prep school, Monkstown Park in Monkstown. He went to Campbell College in Belfast, but was very unhappy and left. He then went to school in England, but didn’t stay very long. He suffered a breakdown and came home to Dun Laoghaire. He was treated by Jonathan Hanaghan, a psychotherapist, the founder of the Monkstown Group of Analysts. Harry went to Trinity College, Dublin and studied medicine. He was awarded the Conolly Norman medal for Psychiatry. He joined the British Army and served as a psychiatrist in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the war. He married a Welsh nurse called Mary Williams. He returned to Dun Laoghaire in 1958 to visit the family and was planning to move permanently back to Dublin. However, he died suddenly. Most likely his death was suicide. He was much loved by his sisters, Jean and Elizabeth.
