Violet Elsie Fannin nee Parsons was my great aunt. I never met her because she died before we came back to Ireland. She was the matriarch of the family and was formidable. She married Thomas Alfred Fannin who owned Fannin’s Surgical Supplies, a very successful Dublin business based in Grafton St. She had two children, Sylvia and Eustace. There were many stories about the Fannins, their beautiful house at 32 Herbert Park, their wealth, the staunch Methodism which meant that they didn’t drink. My mother’s story was that Sylvia and Eustace didn’t marry because Auntie Vi, as she was known, wouldn’t let them. Read all about them in ‘People Like Us’.
