Dr Alfred Robert Parsons was my great uncle, brother of my grandfather, George Parsons. Uncle Alf, as he was known to us, was born in 1864. He was the oldest of the family of John Parsons. The family lived above the shop on Victoria Place. Uncle Alf was very clever, went to Wesley College and on to Trinity College where he studied medicine. He also studied in Heidelburg, in Germany. He became Visiting Physician of the Royal City of Dublin Hospital in 1894 and stayed there for the next fifty years or so. He was very well known in medical circles, something of a character, and taught generations of Irish doctors. See the poem ‘Vale’ by Ethna MacCarthy. There are lots of funny stories about Alfred Parsons. See ‘People Like Us’ for more about him.
