George Thomas Parsons was my grandfather. He was born in Athlone in 1866 and was the son designated to take over running the shoe shop business. He married Grace McClenaghan, the youngest child of Canon George McClenaghan, rector of St Peter’s Church in Athlone. In 1920 the Parsons family left Athlone and moved to Greystones, Co Wicklow. I think the move was related to the fact that Ireland was going to become independent from Great Britain and there were signs of violence against the Protestant community of Athlone George was a sailor, a golfer, and a devout Methodist. He was a good businessman. He died in 1948 before I was born. Read all about him in ‘People Like Us’.
