Canon Rev George McClenaghan was my great grandfather. He came from a small sheep farm in the Mourne Mountains. He was a scholarship boy who went to the Santry School outside Dublin and then to Trinity College, Dublin. He met and married Caroline Geary in 1858. Theirs was a love match. George’s first job was as a school principal of Newry School and then the family moved to Primrose Grange School, Sligo, a forerunner of Sligo Grammar School. When George was ordained the family moved to Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, where their youngest child, my grandmother, Grace McClenaghan was born. The family then moved to Athlone where George was the rector of St Peter’s Church, Athlone. He was a well educated man and much admired and loved.
